The Beginning of the Apparitions

For more than four decades, the small village of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina has become one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.

Millions of pilgrims have traveled there in search of peace, healing, conversion, and a deeper relationship with God. Although the Catholic Church has not formally declared the apparitions to be supernatural, the Vatican has acknowledged the many spiritual fruits connected to Medjugorje and has encouraged pilgrimages and devotion there.

The reported apparitions began on June 24, 1981, when six young villagers claimed to see the Blessed Virgin Mary on a rocky hillside near the village.

The children were: Ivanka Ivanković, Mirjana Dragičević, Vicka Ivanković, Ivan Dragičević, Marija Pavlović, and Jakov Čolo. At the time, they ranged in age from about 10 to 16 years old. Jakov was 10 years old.

According to their testimony, the Virgin Mary appeared to them as the “Queen of Peace,” calling the world to prayer, fasting, conversion, reconciliation, and peace.

The messages emphasized the importance of returning to God, attending Mass, praying the Rosary, reading Sacred Scripture, and seeking peace within families and nations.

The lovely website: MaryTv.tv, founded by Denis and Cathy Nolan, is a platform that provides comprehensive information on the history of, and current activities in, Medjugorje. On this website, you can browse all of the messages given to the visionaries by the Virgin Mary. Read the messages here!

Another important section on this website, Fruit of Medjugorje, presents hundreds of testimonies of pilgrims. These are definitely worth your while.

Medjugorje During the Communist Era

The apparitions began during a difficult period in the former Communist nation of Yugoslavia. Religious expression was often viewed with suspicion by the authorities, and the visionaries and local Franciscans experienced interrogation, pressure, and criticism from Communist officials. Yet the events in Medjugorje continued to attract pilgrims from around the world.

Over time, the region itself experienced dramatic political and social transformation as Yugoslavia collapsed and the nations of the Balkans gradually moved away from Communism toward democratic systems.

The Simplicity and Faith of the Villagers

One of the remarkable aspects of Medjugorje is the simplicity and faith of the local villagers. Pilgrims often speak about the spirit of prayer found there: daily Masses, Eucharistic Adoration, Confession, Rosaries prayed on Apparition Hill and Cross Mountain, and the warm hospitality of local families.

Many visitors describe Medjugorje as a place where people rediscover their faith and experience a profound interior peace.

The Vatican itself noted the “many positive fruits” associated with Medjugorje and described it as a place of “great peace, recollection, and sincere piety.”

The Lives of the Visionaries

The six visionaries eventually married and began families of their own. Some still live in or near Medjugorje, while others live abroad. Several continue to report daily or annual apparitions. Over the years, they have shared messages centered on peace, prayer, and conversion.

Their lives have remained a source of fascination and inspiration to many pilgrims who see in them ordinary people chosen for an extraordinary mission.

Miracles, Healings, and Conversions

Countless pilgrims have reported spiritual and physical healings after visiting Medjugorje. Many speak of returning to the sacraments after years away from the Church, overcoming addictions, restoring broken marriages, or discovering religious vocations.

While the Church investigates miracle claims carefully and cautiously, stories of conversion and healing have continued for decades. For many believers, the greatest miracle of Medjugorje is the transformation of hearts and souls.

The International Youth Festival

One of the most inspiring events in Medjugorje is the annual Medjugorje International Youth Festival, also known as “Mladifest.” Every August, tens of thousands of young Catholics from around the world gather for prayer, music, testimonies, Eucharistic Adoration, and Mass.

The festival has become one of the largest Catholic youth gatherings in the world and is known for its joyful spirit, reverent atmosphere, and powerful witness of faith among young people.

The Vatican and Medjugorje

In recent years, the Vatican has taken important steps regarding Medjugorje. In 2019, Pope Francis officially permitted organized pilgrimages to the site. Then, in September 2024, the Vatican granted Medjugorje a “Nihil Obstat,” meaning Catholics may prudently participate in the spiritual devotion connected to Medjugorje, while the Church continues to refrain from formally declaring the apparitions supernatural.

The Vatican emphasized the many good spiritual fruits experienced by pilgrims there.

A Place of Peace and Spiritual Renewal

Today, Medjugorje continues to draw pilgrims from every continent. Whether one arrives seeking healing, renewal, forgiveness, or simply peace, many leave with a renewed sense of God’s presence and a stronger commitment to prayer and faith.

For those longing for a deeper spiritual experience, Medjugorje offers something increasingly rare in the modern world: silence, prayer, confession, Eucharistic devotion, and a call to return to God.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Medjugorje, prayerfully consider making the journey. Many pilgrims arrive as "tourists", but leave as transformed believers filled with peace, hope, and renewed faith.
