What Are Sacramentals?
The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes sacramentals as sacred signs instituted by the Church that prepare people to receive the fruits of the sacraments and sanctify different circumstances of life. They include blessed objects, prayers, gestures, and devotions that direct the faithful toward Christ and the grace He offers.
Unlike the seven sacraments, which were instituted by Christ Himself and confer grace directly, sacramentals are instituted by the Church and derive their spiritual effectiveness from the prayers of the Church and the disposition of the person using them.
